Invention turns cell phone into mobile medical lab
“How about in a few seconds? Such a device may be available in the near future, and it could turn a cell phone into a mobile medical lab -- and change the way doctors treat patients in rural areas far from hospitals.” At UCLA using just a few off the shelf parts a professor turned a phone into a camera that he can get to produce an image that shows the thousands of cells in a small fluid sample such as human blood. The device is call LUCAS, it uses a short wavelength blue light to illuminate a sample of liquid, blood, saliva or another fluid, on a laboratory slide.

“Each new calf the group spots gives her hope that the right whale -- a highly endangered and often-overlooked species -- will recover.” They are the most endangered large whale species, with only 400 left in the world. They’re usually hit by ships because of their jet black color, and whale hunters illegally hunt them because they are so big (7 tons) and when killed float to the top.
